In Florida, the southernmost state on the mainland of the U.S., is home to some 14 million people. The peninsula separates the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico and extends in the direction of the Caribbean. The northern border to the southwest Florida is about 690 km long. Florida was first discovered by Poncé de Léon in 1513.

The state has an area of 151,714 km ² and is almost as big as England. The capital of Florida is Tallahassee, a relatively small city in the Panhandle - the narrow strip of land along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico towards the west.

Florida, divided in seven different regions, each with its own geographic and cultural character. In the south lies the swampy Everglades and the tropical Keys, while the vacation capital of Miami rises to the east.
