Five New Buildings in Laterra Links

The new owner of Laterra Links, Homes by Deltona, a division of the Deltona Corp., has selected Legacy Builders of North Florida to build five new multi-unit buildings in 2010. Construction is expected to start in January.

In 2007, when Jamestown, Va., held a yearlong, much-ballyhooed “America’s 400th anniversary” celebration, Florida historians were a bit miffed.

“St. Augustine is the place where America began,” says Michael Gannon, professor emeritus of history at the University of Florida. “By the time Jamestown was founded, St. Augustine was up for urban renewal.”

As the nation's longest continually inhabited European-founded city, St. Augustine, Fla., considers itself the oldest city in the United States. Founded in 1565 by Spanish Adm. Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, this community of 13,000 residents on Florida's northeastern coast has managed to maintain its colonial charm. Take the Castillo de San Marcos, for example.
